The crowd are a mass of people, but we know each individual has a small story or fact (some more vague and abstract, others are specific moments). These observational imagined statements  were set out in very simple rhymes (often very contrasting statements within the two rhyming sentences) pulling these two strangers together in rhyme but also maintaining their differenece.
